Brian C. Smith, Ph.D., is founder, CEO, and Chief Technical Officer of Big Sur Scientific. He has over thirty years’ experience as a trainer and consultant to the pharmaceutical industry, and his customers have included Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, and Amgen. Dr. Smith has published numerous peer reviewed papers and has written three books on analytical chemistry, Fundamentals of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, and Infrared Spectral Interpretation: A Systematic Approach published by CRC Press, and Quantitative Spectroscopy: Theory and Practice published by Elsevier. Brian teaches courses for the American Chemical Society, the California Criminalists Institute, and CfPIE. Over the years thousands of attendees have learned to improve their chemical analyses through his expert instruction. He also writes a regular column for the peer reviewed publication Spectroscopy called, “Infrared Spectral Interpretation Workshop”.
At Big Sur Scientific Dr. Smith has performed pioneering research in the application of analytical chemistry to the analysis of cannabis medicines. He is the inventor of the patented BSS family of cannabis analyzers, which are used around the world to help companies make safe and effective cannabis medicines. Brian writes a regular column for the peer reviewed publication Cannabis Science and Technology called “Cannabis Analysis” and sits on the editorial board of that publication. Earlier in his career Brian worked as an industrial analytical chemist at companies like Xerox, Waters Associates, and Bio-Rad. Dr. Smith earned his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Dartmouth College.
